My analysis suggests that regardless of art museums’ socially inclusive agendas, they appear to retain a hierarchical set of assumptions about aesthetic sensibilities. Instead, these exhibitions used various techniques selecting amateur photographs that resembled works of famous photographers, or that echoed established patterns of visual language and artistic motifs to persuade the reader to engage with the photographs’ creativity. Despite their different curatorial intentions and strategies, all three museums struggled to represent the banality of vernacular photography. Through an examination of exhibition catalogues, reviews, and press releases, I investigate the curatorial rationale behind three art museums’ exhibitions of vernacular photography. As museums aim to celebrate and publicize vernacular photography, their role in the production of cultural knowledge invites closer analysis of curatorial strategy.
